New Delhi. The fisheries sector plays a crucial role in Indian economy, providing livelihood and employment to millions, as well as significantly contributing to the country’s nutritional security. However, the sector remains largely unorganized, with many small-scale fishers, farmers, vendors, and processors lacking formal recognition and access to institutional support at national level The National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) and its mobile app is envisioned as a transformative tool for formalizing the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in India. It aims to create a comprehensive digital registry of fish producers and associated stakeholders, such as, vendors, processors, and micro and small enterprises.

By providing a centralized platform for registration and self-reporting, the platform will enable stakeholders to establish work-based identities and gain access to a wide range of government programs and schemes, including credit facilitation, aquaculture insurance incentives, performance grants, traceability systems, and financial incentives disbursement.

The digital platform will also offer access to marketing, e-commerce, and business-to-business (B2B) marketplaces, supporting direct benefit transfers (DBT), integration with public sector platforms for social safety nets, e-auctioning, the provision of common facilities, extension services, and fisheries-related information. To ensure the integrity of the system, a robust verification mechanism involving local authorities will be established. To encourage registration on NFDP financial incentive will be provided to fishers and other stakeholders for getting registered on NFDP through self or assisted mode of registration.

Agencies like Common Service Centers (CSCs) and Fisheries Cooperatives will mobilize and assist in these efforts, and a pan-India campaign will be launched to promote self-registration. CSCs and cooperatives will undertake registration tasks, including collection and verification of self-registrations and relevant documents with the help of District/Block level local fisheries officers of the States/UTs Fisheries Department.

Registered beneficiaries can avail benefits of all components under PM-MKSSY through NFDP viz. access to institutional finance, strengthening of cooperative to function as FFPOs, aquaculture insurance, performance grant, traceability, training and capacity building etc.
National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) as a transformative initiative by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries will transform the fisheries sector by creating a robust and accessible digital framework. This holistic approach will optimize sector performance and improve livelihoods, promote sustainable practices, and bolster food security, marking a significant step towards a more organized and prosperous fisheries industry.
